  • for scholarly work, the Oxford English Dictionary; if you don’t have access through a university, if you’re in the UK you may be able to get access through your local library.
  • for editing, The New Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors.
  • for general use, I use Collins (UK) and Merriam Webster (US) most often.

Style Guides:

  • Guardian and Observer
  • for academic style guides (MLA, Harvard APA, Chicago, etc.), I prefer to have a hard copy when possible; if you need to check something quickly, The Purdue OWL page is very good.
  • New Hart’s Rules
